The DRAMA is the only competition of original dramatic texts in Slovakia. By the competition the Bratislava Theatre Institute has supported publishing and promoting of contemporary original texts since 2000.

The texts which reached the final were published by the Theatre Institute in six collections entitled DRAMA.

The winning texts were produced in the Slovak Chamber Theatre in Martin, the Slovak National Theatre, the GUnaGU Theatre in Bratislava, the Ján Palárik Theatre in Trnava, the Alexander Duchnovič Theatre in Prešov and the Sudio12 in Bratislava. Some of the plays were later translated into different languages and presented Slovak drama at various international festivals.

During the existence of the competition there has been a success in creating the awareness about contemporary Slovak drama, initiating the development of new texts by established authors and motivating young authors and students to write dramatic texts. The competition has discovered many new names, and for many theatre editors in Slovak theatres the DRAMA competition is a platform bringing news in the field of original creative work.

One of the parts of the competition is THRIATHLON – the staged reading of the winning texts, which, like the ceremony winner announcement, takes place annually in May during Nová drama / New Drama festival. The meaning of the staged reading is, among the stage performance of the competing text, to give a chance to the young and perspective directors to present themselves on professional stages and create an inspiring dialogue between the author of the text, the potential producer and the audience.
