THE PRESENT OF THE THEATRE PAST

A guided tour of the Theatre Institute's collections and archives is available for organized groups, primarily secondary school and university students, as well as other closed groups of interested members of both the professional and general public. During the tour, the institution’s experts present a selection of items from the Theatre Institute Museum collections—set and costume designs, scenographic models—and explain the methods used to preserve documentation and informational materials on productions of Slovak professional theatres since 1920.

The tour continues in the Memorial Room of Ján and Oľga Borodáč, where visitors become familiar with the Theatre Institute’s online databases and projects that reflect professional theatre activity in Slovakia from various perspectives. It concludes in the Theatre Institute’s special library, which, in terms of the size of its collection, is the largest theatre-focused library in Slovakia.

RADIOJOURNAL PALACE

Did you know today’s Theatre Institute building originally housed Czechoslovak Radio as the Radiojournal Palace, one of the first structures built exclusively for radio broadcasting and home to the first Slovak film studios? Let’s take a walk through this space full of genius loci.

Together with art historian and expert in 20th-century architecture Soňa Ščepánová, we will explore the premises of Studio 12 and the Theatre Institute, uncover hidden corners, and learn more about the building's history, its architects, and the purposes the space served in the past.

CLASSICS IN A GRAPHIC NOVEL

Between 2019 and 2023, the Theatre Institute participated in the international project Classics in a Graphic Novel, implemented with the support of the European Union under the Creative Europe programme. The aim of the project was to create a model of cultural education for secondary schools through the medium of graphic novels (comics), thereby fostering students’ relationship to theatre, engaging young audiences, and presenting classical dramatic texts in an attractive and accessible way.

Three key works of world drama were adapted into comic form: Sophocles’ tragedy Antigone, Alfred Jarry’s play Ubu Roi, and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Read more on the project website: Classics in a Graphic Novel.

The project was accompanied by a rich educational programme prepared independently by project partners at the national level. The Slovak programme was implemented in two strands:

  • Model workshops for secondary school students on the themes of individual comics were complemented by methodological and working materials for teachers (prepared in cooperation with the EDUdrama association).
  • Three panel exhibitions of comic interpretations based on the project’s dramatic texts were created by students of a secondary school of applied arts and supplemented with lectures and presentations (prepared in cooperation with the Secondary School of Applied Arts of Josef Vydra in Bratislava).

Workshops Antigone, Romeo and Juliet, and Ubu Roi are offered for organized groups of 8th–9th grade primary school students (Romeo and Juliet) and secondary school students (all works).
