The Centre for Theatre Documentation is headed by a manager who is appointed and removed from office by the Director of the Theatre Institute.
The following activities are defined for the Centre for Theatre Documentation:
The Centre for Theatre Documentation collects and systematically processes documentary and archival materials related to Slovak professional theatre from its inception in 1920 to the present. It documents the artistic activities of Slovak professional theatre makers in all forms – from drama, musical theatre, and puppet theatre to dance, physical theatre, pantomime, and other performative genres. Its scope of activities includes also documenting production of minority-language and ethnic-minority theatres operating in Slovakia after 1945 – Hungarian, Ukrainian-Rusyn, and Romany. Extensive, well-organized collections and fonds provide both basic and in-depth information, and serve various purposes from scholarly to promotional. The Centre for Theatre Documentation creates and maintains an electronic database of its collections and fonds, and guarantees its reliability. For documentary, research, study, and promotional purposes, it maintains and continuously broadens a video library, film library, and audio library related to Slovak theatre culture. It processes and systematically builds book and other relevant print collections within the framework of an independently operating special library. It ensures the operation of the Theatre Institute Museum and the Theatre Institute Archive in accordance with the given laws.
