In the past decades the Theatre Institute has focused on producing archive and documentation materials about personalities who have formed Slovak professional theatre. The Theatre Institute provides the expert as well as the general public, educational and cultural institutions and the media with the following services:
Documentation
Documenting funds offer the possibility to study printed and pictorial documents from the past and the present times of Slovak professional theatre since its establishment in 1920 on the premises of the theatre. The most important and most frequently used means of the funds include.
- drama envelopes (containing a bulletin, pictures, and printed comments to single drama plays)
- personal envelopes of Slovak and foreign theatre artists (including pictures, printed reactions and interviews, profiles; reactions to foreign works, lists of characters and awards or other personal documents)
- topic envelopes (containing written and pictorial documents from the various fields of theatre life included according to single topics: drama institutions, festivals, culture policy, evaluation of single seasons etc.)
Based on special agreement it is possible to study the materials of further funds:
- personal envelopes of Slovak and foreign theatre artists in the field of stage setting and costume art
- negatives, diapositives and scans
Archive Funds & Collections
Archive funds and collections of the Theatre Institute are open to expert and general public exclusively based on individual agreement.
The funds offer the possibility to study written and pictorial material of extraordinary historical and cultural value documenting the establishment and the history of Slovak drama on the premises of the Institute.
The most extensive parts count:
- personal funds of theatre artists (containing personal and professional pictures taken during performances, written material such as manuscripts, typescripts, letters, bulletins, invitation cards, personal documents etc.)
- collections of archive documents of the theatres (containing various lists such as the lists of ensemble members, administration documents, correspondence etc.)
- collection of drama texts (including stage director’s handbooks, stage manager’s handbooks, performer books regarding the plays presented or to be presented on Slovak stages)
Library
The Theatre Institute library offers information and consultancy services and the possibility to study the materials on theatre science on the premises.
The funds include:
- theatre plays (drama texts by Slovak and foreign authors written in the Slovak and the Czech languages or in Russian, German, English, Hungarian and other languages)
- monographs (in the field of theatre history and theory and monographs on the personalities of the Slovak and foreign theatre)
- periodicals (weeklies, bi-weeklies, and other magazines dealing with theatre science or culture. Most of them are Slovak or Czech, however, the fund features also German, English, American, Polish, Hungarian and Russian and other periodicals)
- secondary sources (bibliographies and catalogues)
Based on individual agreement we provide the following research services:
- research services covering information databases of the Theatre Institute (on-line database)
- research services covering electronic databases of the Slovak and the Czech national bibliography
In electronic form it is possible to access:
- on-line catalogue of the book stock
- on-line database of selected bibliographies
- information and consultancy services
Video Archives
Video archives of the Theatre Institute are part of audiovisual funds of the Theatre Institute offering the possibility to study the videos included on the premises of the participating institutions. The visitors may do so in two rooms directly on the premises of the Theatre Institute or in the Information Centre PROSPERO.
The video archives of the Theatre Institute include the following records:
- drama plays by Slovak and foreign theatre ensembles
- interviews with some outstanding personalities of professional Slovak theatre
- documentaries from the field of theatre
- TV plays and movies based on drama plays by Slovak and foreign authors
- transcriptions of older recordings from the film archives of the Theatre Institute
The following services are available on-line:
- on-line catalogue of the video archive fund
- information and consultancy services
Sound Recordings Library
The sound recordings library of the Theatre Institute is part of the audiovisual funds of the Theatre Institute accessible exclusively based on individual agreement.
The sound recordings library fund includes:
- recordings of theatre plays
- recorded interviews with some outstanding personalities of professional Slovak theatre
- scenic music or songs performed as part of Slovak and Czech plays
- transcriptions of older recordings from sound recordings library of the Theatre Institute (recordings of sound tapes made especially for the needs of the Theatre Institute)
Multimedia Funds
Multimedia fund are accessible exclusively based on individual agreement. The funds include CDs and DVDs containing various data.
The main parts of the multimedia funds are:
- multimedia records (theatre plays presentations or presentations of theatre institutions and personalities)
- databases (various address books and surveys of cultural institutions and events)
- scans (series of pictorial documentation from the field of theatre in Slovakia and abroad)
- texts (dealing with theatre science in electronic form)
Collections Of (other) Items Of Exhibition & Museum Value
The collections are accessible exclusively based on individual agreement since they contain items of exhibition and museum value documenting the professional activities as well as the personal life of drama artists in Slovakia.
The collections contain:
- personal belongings of theatre artists
- works of art created by theatre artists
- works of art obtained using the finances provided by theatre artists (mainly heritages)
- works of art depicting theatre (portraits of theatre artists etc.)
Stage Setting Material Collections
Stage setting collections are part of the Collections of exhibition and museum value. They are accessible exclusively based on individual agreement and offer the possibility to study documents and works of art relating to professional Slovak theatre on the premises of the institute.
The collection includes items relating to Slovak stage setting and costume design:
- stage and costume design
- stage maquettes
- theatre posters
- stage setting collection of the puppet theatre
Clipping Service
The Theatre Institute offers to institutions and organisations monitoring and clipping service of selected periodicals based on set criteria. The service is provided based on written order.
