Focus Russia
12 – 14 May 2008, Bratislava
Focus Russia is a special programme section of the 4th year of the NOVÁ DRÁMA/NEW DRAMA festival of contemporary Slovak and world’s drama. The presentation of the Focus Russia is a result of the partnership of the Bratislava Theatre Institute in the international project called the European Translation Workshop and of a long-lasting co-operation with Russian dramatic scene.

Focus Russia is a unique presentation and it gives an opportunity to learn more about contemporary Russian theatre and current dramatic works of Russian dramatists.
Focus Russia is to be held under the personal participation of its supervisor John Freedman and five outstanding contemporary Russian dramatists (Olya Mukchina, Maxim Kurochkin, Yuri Klavdiev Yelena Isayeva and Rodion Belecky).
Focus Russia is being held within the European Translation Workshop project in association with the Astorka Korzo´90 Theatre.

Yevgeni Grishkovec: Winter
Directed by: J. Czajlik
Performed by: Z. Furková, L. Latinák, M. Miezga
A theatre play by one of the most acclaimed Russian theatre professional grotesquely unveils the secrets of human peculiarities and curiosities in interpersonal relationships. By creating a contrast to the conditions of newly-made society it shows – through metaphoric scenes and dream-like memories – revaluations of traditional partner bonds within new concepts of interpersonal relationships. This chamber production was directed by exceptionally inventive director József Czajlik. It is our ambition to present this impressive production with a current message.

Olya Mukchina: FLYING
Directed by: Marián Amsler
Flying is composed of recorded real dialogues heard by the author herself from her Moscow friends. She spent a long time collecting this material; the first version of the play was published on a website in November 2004. Mukchina also directed this play (premiere: 1 June 2005 at the Mayakovsky Theatre in Moscow). The production from Prague is the first staging of this text outside Russia. “Flying is in fact a film script, Mukchina doesn´t write that one character moves to the left side of the stage and sits in an armchair. Mukchina doesn´t write that the character travels by an overcrowded tram, looks at the reflection of his face in the window, gets off, walks in the street, passing people, takes a lift to the highest floor of some skyscraper and from there observes night Moscow… In theatre we work with reducing means, we doesn´t want to create a visual illusion of reality, we want to grasp a moment, feeling, impression, emotion, state… The rest is on spectator’s imagination. We offer him space to dream with us. Perhaps about him flying… ” (M. Amsler).
The guest performance of the Letí Theatre from Prague with Mukchina´s play is to be presented with the presence of the author.

Yuri Klavdiev: I'm a Machine-gunner
Directed by: Irina Kerutchenko

In this monodramaYuri Klavdiev, a contemporary dramatist from Toliatti, speaks in the language of action films, but through the criminal speech and contemporary reality of “settling accounts”, jeeps and street anarchy there are other, lexical and time layers leak out. The subconscious of the grandson-criminal enters the mind of his grandfather, a Great War veteran. Two epochs and two wars meet here: the patriotic and liberating one and today´s bloody slaughters with no rules and targets.
