THE CHILDREN OF THE REVOLUTION

In 2008 the Bratislava Theatre Institute announced the competition for the best scientific essay called The Children of the Revolution. The aim of the project was to support creative and scientific thinking of young people, and the relationship to the science and research in the field of humanity sciences and today’s reflection of historical moments.
The competition was joined by students of various universities. The main task was to develop a voluminous scientific essay up to 25 pages, dealing with the theme Theatre and the Velvet Revolution. The participating students created a working team for which the Theatre Institute organized from November 2008 and in the curse of the year 2009 thematic block lectures and discussions. The lectures and discussions dealt with the historical period and atmosphere of the revolutionary year 1989 and the 1990s. The lectures were given by professionals in the field of history, political studies, sociology, theory and history of theatre, cultural studies, philosophy, aesthetics, cultural anthropology etc. During the project the students specified their particular theme and the concept of their work, and in autumn 2009 they produced their essay. In September 2009 the professional jury chose three winning essays (1st place – 30000 Crowns/1000 Euros; 2nd place – 20000 Crowns/664Euros; 3rd place – 10000 Crowns / 332 Euros).
The Children of the Revolution project ended by an international symposium held in November 2009 during the celebrations of 20 years of the Velvet Revolution. On the symposium the students had the opportunity to present their essays.
In 2010 the Theatre Institute published a book of the best essays.
