The Theatre Research Centre – Characteristic

The Theatre Research Centre is a platform of the Theatre Institute founded in 2006 and is based on the need of a systematic analysis of theatre in Slovakia (history and theory, methodology and terminology, tendencies and present state, support of young artists).
One of the important roles of the Centre is a revitalization of the documentation and the archive of the Theatre Institute, using a complex database of personalities, theatres, ensembles, productions and events of Slovak professional theatres since 1920, and collaboration with external research bodies from Slovakia and abroad. The project also includes collaboration between the internal employees of the Theatre Institute and external specialists by which there are created conditions favourable for a quality long-term and extensive scientific cooperation.
In 2010 the Theatre Institute received an important accreditation from the Ministry of Education – the certificate of competence to perform research and development. This confirmed the long-term quality research activity in the field of theatre science and preserving cultural heritage.
The Theatre Research Centre focuses on the scientific activity and research of the Theatre Institute’s departments (mainly the Theatre Documentation, Information and Digitalisation Department, Publishing Department and Projects Department). It creates the roof platform for scientific activity in the field of history and theory, and it prefers modern scientific methods and approaches for their analytical execution by supporting the methodological standards in the field of research or inter-disciplinary connection to other cultural spheres. These main objectives and aims of the Theatre Research Centre are to support the research and preserve cultural heritage concerning theatre  and its spreading throughout professionals as well as the broader public.
The Theatre Research Centre follows the principles of its Status and it includes expertise working groups for particular projects.
The Theatre Institute / Theatre Research Centre is included in the FIRT / IFTR International Federation of Theatre Research.
